The United Arab Emirates is observing a somber 10-day mourning period in Dubai following the passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. The loss of Sheikh Ahmed, who played significant roles in both governance and sports, has prompted an outpouring of condolences from the country’s leadership.
Sheikh Ahmed died on Monday and was laid to rest at Umm Hurair Cemetery in Dubai after funeral prayers at Zabeel Grand Mosque. The funeral brought together prominent figures, including UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Rulers and Crown Princes of the Emirates, who gathered at the Zabeel Majlis to express their sympathies to Sheikh Mohammed.

Sheikh Ahmed’s legacy includes his service as deputy chairman of Dubai Police and chairman of ARM Holding. Additionally, he was deeply involved in the UAE’s sports scene, notably founding the Jebel Ali Racecourse in 1990 and serving as the president of Al Wasl Sports Club for many years. His contributions to the UAE since its formation have been fondly remembered by those who knew him.
