Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport is embarking on an ambitious project to establish a 50-kilometer autonomous people mover network designed to transport passengers seamlessly across its expansive complex. This driverless rail system, which will initially feature nine stations, is slated for completion by December 2031, setting the stage for the airport’s first phase of operations in 2032. Ultimately, the network is expected to expand to 14 stations as additional phases of the airport’s development are realized.
Once completed, this automated people mover network is poised to become the largest of its kind globally, surpassing the capacity and scope of existing systems at major airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK. This infrastructure is part of a broader vision for Al Maktoum International Airport, which aims to accommodate up to 260 million passengers and handle 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. The initial phase will see the introduction of the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover, collectively boosting the airport’s yearly passenger capacity to 130 million.
Beyond enhancing internal connectivity, the airport will also benefit from strategic links to the wider rail network. A planned Airport Express Link is set to connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport, facilitating smoother transitions for passengers. Future expansions include connections to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, further integrating the airport into the region’s comprehensive transport network.
This significant development underscores Dubai’s commitment to advancing its aviation infrastructure to meet future needs. The project not only highlights the strategic importance of Al Maktoum International Airport but also reinforces its role as a pivotal hub in global travel and logistics.
