Arsenal continued their flawless run this season with a 2-0 win against Sunderland, thanks to second-half goals from Bruno Guimarães and Bukayo Saka. Sunderland, however, proved to be Arsenal’s toughest challenge yet, having created several opportunities to take the lead early in the game.
The hosts’ best chance came when Enzo Le Fée won a penalty after being fouled by Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa. Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya, rose to the occasion with an exceptional save, denying Le Fée and keeping the scoreline at 0-0. This pivotal moment seemed to turn the tide in Arsenal’s favor.
Merely two minutes after the penalty save, Arsenal capitalized on the momentum. Guimarães found himself on the edge of the penalty area and delivered a magnificent strike past Sunderland’s goalkeeper, Robin Roefs, giving Arsenal the lead. Despite the setback, Sunderland remained determined and continued to apply pressure in search of an equalizer.
As Sunderland intensified their efforts, Arsenal’s defense was put to the test. Roefs notably thwarted a shot from Saka, and Dan Ballard’s vital goal-line clearance kept Sunderland’s hopes alive. Ultimately, Arsenal secured their victory in stoppage time when Saka converted a penalty following Sunderland defender Reinildo’s dismissal for a second yellow card.
With this win, Arsenal has now amassed six victories in as many matches across all competitions, including the Community Shield, solidifying their strong start in their title defense under Mikel Arteta. Despite the loss, Sunderland’s spirited performance demonstrated their ability to compete with the league’s top teams.
