In a significant transformation within Google’s AI research sector, Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down as chief executive of Google DeepMind. Having co-founded DeepMind in 2010, Hassabis will transition to the role of chair while taking on a new position as chief scientist at Alphabet, the parent company of Google. This move allows him to move away from daily management duties to concentrate on long-term AI research and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently DeepMind’s chief technology officer, will assume leadership as the senior vice-president of the organization. Hassabis expressed that this restructuring would enable him to dedicate more time to the broader development of advanced AI and ensure that the technology serves humanity positively. Furthermore, he will maintain his role as the chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery firm that originated from DeepMind.
These leadership changes coincide with the departure of several senior engineers from Google’s AI division. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are exiting to establish a new startup named Discovery Loop, which will focus on machine learning, as well as science and engineering research. This development occurs amid escalating competition within the AI industry.
Google is facing stiff competition from other prominent players such as OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have achieved notable advancements in AI models and coding technologies.
